Driver Accused Of Killing Sleeping Teen Has DUI History

Monday, June 9, 2008 – updated: 1:32 pm EDT June 13, 2008

The driver accused of killing a sleeping 14-year-old boy when she plowed her pickup truck into his bedroom has at least 2 DUI convictions among a history of five arrests, WSB-TV Channel 2 has learned.

Police say Janette L. Eason, 44, of Dallas was likely drunk when she drove into the one-story home at about 3 a.m. Sunday after knocking down at least three mailboxes and small utility boxes in the neighborhood.

Elliot Savry was killed and his sister, Leah, 13, sustained leg injuries in the crash. The truck entered the Savrys' garage on Legend Hollow Lane and then continued through another wall before crashing into Elliot's bedroom and running over him.

  • The truck pushed him through a wall into a second bedroom where Leah slept before finally stopping, pinning the girl against an exterior wall, her brother's body underneath.

Bond for Eason was raised to $100,000 from $35,000 Monday morning. Eason has been arrested at least five times, with four convictions. Two of the convictions were for driving under the influence, but she never served any jail time.

The victims' family protested the low bond for the suspected drunken driver.

"It's not right, she does not deserve to be on the street," said one family member. "She's going to go back to her liquor."

Police filed eight charges against Eason, including felony vehicular homicide and felony criminal damage to property.

"This woman just killed my cousin's son; and drunk. And she's getting out on bond," said an angry Darren Chang. "I don't think that's right, I don't think that's right at all."

Elliot Savry was killed when a car came crashing into his bedroom.

A spokesperson for the Savry family said Elliot had just finished 8th grade at Tapp Middle School.

Cobb County firefighters spent several hours pulling the teens from the wreckage. Funeral arrangements for Elliot have not been announced.
